J/24 North Americans First Round

Will Welles seems to be in top form as he took the lead in the opening day of the J/24 driveHF.ca North American Championship. There was a delay in the start of the race in the morning and then the breeze kicked in at 6 to 8 knots.

The 2016 J/24 North American Championship Regatta is held between 8 and 11 September 2016 by the Port Credit Yacht Club in Mississauga in Ontario, Canada. The regatta event is one of the most anticipated ones where top sailors from the USA and Canada take part.

While Welles ended the opening day of the race in 1st position on 10 points, Petley Jones finished the day with 13 points, just three behind the leader. Travis Odenbach had a good run on the opening day to finish third with 16 points. Only 6 points separate the first and the third positions and hence the race is wide open for the first prize of a week’s Bareboat Charter in Trogir.

The first battle was between Will Welles on his Cougar and Rossi Milev on Clear Air. James Freedman on Miss Conduct also was given a tough fight to Welles. The 2nd race of the day was won by Spoony Tactics helmed by Todd Fedysyzn which was followed by Petley Jones and Milev. As many as 46 boats are taking part in this three day regatta event in Canada. These boats will be competing against each other in 10 races.

The last race of Day 1 was secured by Will Welley again and hence he stands in the lead position after 3 races. Odenbach came second in the final race to record his best performance of the day and Petley Jones came in a close 3rd in the final race. Rossi Milev is currently in the 4th position. It looks like the final 2 race days will see some tough competition among the top four teams.
